About Unirec

In the realm of fashion, where trends come and go with the seasons, a Mumbai-based startup is rewriting the narrative with a touch of sustainability. UNIREC, born in June 2021 under the visionary leadership of Kapil Bhatia, is making waves by crafting garments from an unexpected source – recycled PET bottles.

Kapil's journey into the world of sustainable clothing began unexpectedly. While participating in exhibitions to expand his two-decade-old apparel business, an intriguing customer request turned into a pivotal moment. The customer wanted more than just t-shirts made from recycled fabrics; they desired shirts, blazers, and trousers. Kapil realized that he stood at the crossroads of a new opportunity – an opportunity that led to the establishment of UNIREC.

Years of market research and experience in the apparel industry had already set Kapil on a path to explore the expansive realm of sustainable fashion. Prior to UNIREC, Kapil had ventured into the apparel world with Brandstore India, specializing in uniforms for major corporates like Vodafone and McDonald’s.

UNIREC's mission is rooted in its commitment to sustainability. Each garment the company produces recycles around 12 PET bottles, converting waste into fashion. Not only does this practice contribute to a greener planet, but it also reduces carbon emissions by a commendable two kilograms per garment. The company boasts a Global Recyclable Standard (GRS) certification, a testament to their dedication to responsible practices.

While UNIREC is still a work in progress, Kapil envisions ambitious goals for both the short and long term. He aspires to reduce carbon emissions by one million and ten million tonnes in the short and long term, respectively. To achieve this, he aims to sell 500,000 garments in the current year and expand that number to five million garments within the next three years.

The global recycled fabrics market is on the rise, with projections indicating substantial growth. In India, UNIREC faces competition from industry players like Rughani Brothers, Bombay Rayon, and Sarvoday Textiles. Despite its youth in the market, UNIREC has managed to sell over 800 pieces through its D2C website. Furthermore, the startup is preparing to make its debut on major e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, widening its reach.

UNIREC's impact extends beyond numbers; it's about a greener planet and conscious choices. The brand isn't just selling clothing; it's selling a lifestyle and a commitment to a better Earth. With each garment, UNIREC empowers its customers to recycle, save water, and protect the environment from plastic waste.

As the fashion industry continues to grapple with its environmental footprint, UNIREC's story stands as a beacon of hope. With its innovative approach to recycling and fashion, UNIREC is making a mark as a leader in sustainable style, proving that fashion can be both stylish and responsible.
