About Scrapshala
Scrapshala is a purpose-driven Indian brand on a mission to make eco-friendly products accessible to all. Founded by women who care deeply about the environment, Scrapshala revives traditional Indian handicrafts by giving new life to waste materials. Their approach, known as upcycling, transforms pre-existing materials into beautiful and functional products.
At Scrapshala, everyone benefits. Skilled artisans find a livelihood applying their time-honored techniques. Consumers own unique, handcrafted items that reduce environmental impact. The company itself fosters a positive and inclusive work environment, championing gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights.
Scrapshala's story began humbly in 2016. Witnessing the decline of traditional crafts due to mass-produced alternatives, the founders envisioned a solution. They aimed to bridge the gap between art, creativity, and waste by creating innovative products that benefit both people and the planet. Their headquarters are located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
The journey started on a balcony in Banaras, where they met their first artisan, Mr. Munare Prajapati. This talented wooden toy painter, forced to sell vegetables due to a dying industry, became a symbol of the challenges faced by traditional craftspeople. Scrapshala offered Mr. Munare a chance to revive his craft, and together they created their first product – a painted beer bottle.
From there, Scrapshala steadily grew. Each month, new artisans joined the team, expanding their product range. Within a year, they boasted over 100 unique items made by a team of 8 artisans. This innovative and ethical approach resonated with both artisans and consumers, leading to the clear vision, mission, and goals established by 2017.
